Jorge L. Riera

Jorge L. Riera was formerly Senior Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Miami, Florida.  Mr. Riera focuses in Securities law, including securities litigation, complex business litigation, FINRA arbitrations, internal investigations, and securities regulatory work.

His experience in the Securities and Financial Services industry, including 10 years as a former senior SEC prosecutor, and 5 years as a former Regional Director of Regulatory Compliance at a globally recognized financial institution prepared him for the complex matters he now handles at Mathews Giberson LLP.

Mr. Riera has experience working on complex investigations and enforcement actions involving violations of the federal securities laws, including accounting fraud, financial fraud, insider trading, market manipulations, offering fraud, Ponzi schemes, proceedings against attorneys, and sales of unregistered securities.

In his risk management and corporate governance practice he has experience in advising in the design, enhancement, and implementation of compliance programs, including internal controls, policies, and procedures; designing and providing comprehensive compliance training to management and employees; advising on and conducting transactional anti-corruption due diligence and integration; reputational risk assessments; and conducting internal investigations.

Professional Achievements

  • Established, implemented and embedded leading practices regulatory and compliance frameworks at global firm that mitigates overall regulatory, compliance and reputational risks, and created a risk management culture enabling the business to manage risk across the South and Mid-Atlantic regions.
  • Appointed by Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA) to Joint Committee with the Florida Office of Financial Regulation to enhance the State of Florida’s international banking regulatory provisions.
  • Co-authored FIBA’s comments in response to FINRA’s proposal to amend and adopt Rules to protect seniors from Financial Exploitation.
  • Recipient of SEC’s Enforcement Division Director Award for lead role in multi-million-dollar global Ponzi scheme that preyed on Hispanic communities.
  • Recipient of SEC’s Excellence in Information Technology Award for co-authoring outstanding “Offering Fraud” website content.
  • Recipient of SEC’s Commissioners’ Distinguished Service Award and Regional Director’s Distinguished Service Award, for dedication in completing investigations.
